Running an outdated operating system poses many risks. As a cost-saving measure, upgrading an operating system shouldn’t be avoided. This is because at the least you’re missing out on important security updates by not updating your OS regularly.
Eventually, every operating system is left behind and unsupported by new technologies and features.
Feature updates and security updates are provided by Microsoft Windows for most laptops or computers, in addition to security and bug fixes.
So, as you can no doubt already imagine it is significant, yet most of us seam to ignore updates, let alone operating system upgrades.
What’s worse is most of us are happy to run outdated operating systems as we do not like too much change, or we are simply worried about losing data or more popular with the recession, it’s too costly.

Risks associated with security
Prepare early to switch to the latest supported operating system when an operating system is marked as ‘end-of-life.’
End of life means just that, your PC is now in the critical stage where time is of the essence to avoid any future PC or laptop issues.
An operating system will no longer be supported when the publisher stops supporting it. Over time, unsupported systems pose a greater security risk, thus, your computer will be more susceptible to a virus.
Most importantly, these vulnerabilities will allow hackers to access your computer and your personal information.
However, the list of possible future issues is actually endless from drivers being no longer supported, to slowing down your computer, to random shutdowns/restarts, freezes, locks, poor ram performance, cooling issues due to unsupported software etc.
Software developed by third parties
A further consequence is that third-party software developers no longer support older operating systems. So if you find your computer shutting down or crashing while using a certain program, this could be why.
Unlike an operating system with a large market share, software companies optimize profits and minimize updates by targeting the latest version of operating system.
An OS’s market share typically drops significantly at the end of its lifecycle. You may be technically able to run third-party software if you continue to use an unsupported OS, but this is still a huge security risk.
OS based on Microsoft Windows
Microsoft Windows is the operating system that comes with most desktop or personal computers.
Microsoft no longer supports Windows XP or Windows Vista. Moreover, Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system was also no longer supported on January 14th, 2020.
As of now, Microsoft will support Windows 10 until 2025, but that does not mean it is already vulnerable, so please upgrade to Windows 11 as soon as possible.
Since Microsoft will continue to support Windows 11 for the foreseeable future, users should move to Windows 11 and avoid using an outdated operating system.
Instead of replacing its operating system every year, Microsoft will continue to release two major updates each year. Microsoft will continue to release security updates as security risks are discovered and fixed.
The good news is Windows 11 was recently released by Microsoft (October 5, 2021). Windows 8/Windows 10 users can update to Windows 11 for free.
So if you have a previous licensed version of the operating system this is great news, however, move fast as this will discontinue soon, and you will be forced to pay full price.
Operating systems for Apple Macs
A similar problem occurs if you use an Apple computer with macOS. As opposed to Microsoft, Apple does not provide end-of-life updates and warnings.
Updates will stop coming to your computer, laptop or tablet when Apple decides not to support an operating system.
Regular security updates are generally released by Apple for the three most recent macOS versions. Yes even Mac’s get viruses so that old myth is wasted here.
macOS 10.14 – Mojave, macOS 10.15 – Catalina, macOS 11 (Big Sur), macOS 12 (Monterey) are the current up-to-date operating systems.
However, as of December 2020, macOS 10.13 High Sierra will no longer be updated so again leaving a long list of vulnerabilities for your Mac if you do not upgrade your operating system ASAP.
