Laptops, the workhorse of the post-pandemic world, with people working from home, on couches, even in bed (hey, no judgement, we’ve done it too!). We rely on our laptop battery longevity even more so these days.
We’re pretty invested in keeping that machine performing well when practically your entire career depends on it.
Let’s talk about some ways we can maximize our laptop investment with good battery care, since laptops can also be a short-lived personal device due to battery issues.
You should resist the urge to charge to 100%
Your battery life is crucial, you don’t need to be worrying about where to plug in if you’re heading out for a workday out of the house on top of doing the work you already worry about.
Therefore, you charge your battery until it reaches 100%.
The next day, you repeat the process.
Then again a few days later.
Laptop battery life is limited to about 500 cycles from empty to full before it starts to degrade.
Only charging up to 80% can give you up to 1500 charges extra without a power cord before your battery life begins to deteriorate.
Likewise, don’t let it get completely empty before plugging it in to reap the maximum benefits.
Batteries also don’t like to get too hot.
The battery of your laptop will perform better if it stays cool, both when it is running and when it is resting.
As long as you are not working in a hot location or doing intensive computing that heats up the battery, using your computer while plugged into your charger is not too much of a problem.
For those of you who have detachable laptop batteries, take them out completely, yes that’s right.
Keep it plugged in as long as you like, then while the battery is detached it will not degrade and your laptop will work perfectly fine.
Bust of course don’t forget the battery when you do need to nip back to the office etc, unless you plan to keep using it with the power cord plugged in and the laptop battery detached, of course.
It also is important to keep your device out of direct sunlight and away from surfaces that trap heat against the battery (maybe don’t work in bed).
When your computer is off, keep it in a cool, ventilated location to extend its battery life.

Since your laptop’s interior electronics are understandably hotter than the ambient temperature, wherever possible for maximum longevity, keep it in a room below 23 Celsius.
