Usually, your ISP will provide your modem and router with an external IP address.

The router then provides the computer’s behind it with an internal IP address.

Power-cycling the network will often reset network settings, renew IP addresses and get things working again.

To do this, shut down your computer, unplug the router and then unplug the modem.

Plug them back in, starting with the modem, then router. Give each a few minutes for all lighting to go green, then power up the computer.

Make Sure the Network Adapter is Enabled

It is also possible to accidentally turn off your network adapter.

This is especially true on laptops that have buttons or switches that allow you to disable your Wi-Fi.

To find out if your adapter is disabled, right-click My Computer, select Properties, then click the hardware tab. Under Device Manager, look for your network adapter, plus confirm there is no red X over it.

Check Your IP Address

To be sure you have an IP address local to your network, go to Start<Run and type cmd and strike enter.

Type “ ipconfig /all “ and confirm you provide an IP address just like 192.168.1.2. If you have a 169.x.x.x IP address, then your computer is not getting an IP from the router, as it should.

You can try right-clicking your network association icon down by the clock and selecting “Repair” to see it that resolves the situation.

If you have a wired connection, you can try a new cable.

You can also check to confirm your adapter is set up to automatically get an IP address for your computer from the router.

To do so, go to the Control Panel, Available Network Connections and then right-click your network then select Properties.

Focus on TCP/IP and choose properties again.

Unless you have previously specified otherwise, make sure this is set to Automatic.

If not already set to Obtain IP Address, Automatically reboot the computer or laptop.

Fix Corrupt Winsock on Windows

Winsock is an interface between Windows and TCP/IP. Most people will realize there is a problem with their Winsock record only when they cannot access the Internet.

Malware, rootkits or a virus will often corrupt the Winsock, and it will be necessary for certain registry secrets to be restored.

You can also check the Winsock for corruption by using Msinfo32.

Go to Start, then run and type Msinfo32 and strike OK. You will need to get around to Components>Network>Protocol, then look for the following headings:

RSVP UDP Service Provider

RSVP TCP Service Provider

You will see some info under each of these, but if anything is absent or increased, you likely have a Winsock issue.

Reset Network Options IN THE Router

Normally, the router should have an IP address just like your computer or laptop.

It will have the external IP address provided from your ISP.

It will also have what is known as a gateway IP for your interior network. This is usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 with respect to the manufacturer.

In the network settings, you will find an option for it to act as a DHCP server.

Make sure this is enabled.

You will also find an SSID setup.

This can be renamed to whatever you want, just make sure it is not a name your neighbours can associate with you, such as “John Smith’s Router.”

From within the router, you can also change the Wi-Fi security type and password.

If the devices are having issues connecting, it is likely because you are not using the correct password.

Change the Wi-Fi password to whatever you want, and tape the password to your router for future research.
